These four-legged furries come in many varieties! There are many breeds, which are categorized into sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, herding, and miscellaneous class according to the American Kennel Club.
Of course, the mixed breed "mutt" is also very popular! Dogs make great companions and are in a large percentage of American households.
There are a lot of movies that have featured dogs, including Benji, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin (okay, that's really old now), and others. Richard Gere made a movie a few years ago about Hachi, an Akita. The movie is an adaptation of a real story of incredible devotion - in fact, there are statues and celebrations in Japan every year in Hachi's honor.
